The city of Goodwill, Mahikeng is gearing up to welcome 21 universities from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries as it plays host to the 22nd edition of the Southern African Universities Staff Sports Association (SAUSSA) games. The prestigious event, already underway started on December 11 and will end on December 15, is expected to foster a sense of sportsmanship and camaraderie among member universities.
The SAUSSA games, an annual gathering held in December, follow a rotational hosting pattern among member universities. Staff members from these institutions engage in various recreational sports, arts, and cultural activities, creating an environment of friendly competition and cultural exchange. Participating universities will compete in a wide range of sports, including soccer, netball, volleyball, basketball, tennis, athletics, tug-of-war, aerobics, table tennis, darts, chess, and pool/snooker.
The diverse array of sports promises an intense and thrilling competition, providing participants with the platform to showcase their athletic prowess. The official opening ceremony, set to take place amidst great anticipation, will feature addresses from distinguished figures, including the Vice-Chancellor of North-West University (NWU), Prof Bismark Tyobeka, and the Executive Mayor of Mahikeng, Councillor Tshepiso Mphehlo. Rebecca Mheta, the General Secretary of the NWU Staff Club, expressed the institution's honour in hosting the esteemed SAUSSA Games.
She emphasized that SAUSSA serves as a unifying platform for universities, reflecting NWU's commitment to sports excellence and regional collaboration through active participation and hosting events of this magnitude. With participants already busy with the games, the SAUSSA Games in Mafikeng promise not only thrilling competitions but also an atmosphere of unity and celebration of athletic achievements.
