The Puma Proteas showcased their prowess in a series of decisive victories, marking a strong start to their campaign at the University of Botswana Indoor Sports Arena in Gaborone. The South African Men's Netball Team kicked off their journey with a resounding win over Kenya, securing a 42-30 victory in Botswana's capital.
The team's determina- tion and skill were further highlighted in subsequent matches, including a crucial triumph against hosts Botswana. As the only continental championship for men, the Africa Netball Cup witnessed spirited competition among the five participating nations - South Africa, Uganda, Kenya, Zimbabwe, and Botswana. Zambia, initially slated to compete, withdrew at the last minute, adding an unexpected twist to the tournament.
Team captain 5Shiko Mokaila expressed the team's singular mission in Botswana: to claim the gold medal and assert their dominance on the continent. The skipper emphasized that the team's success is a result of the country's commitment to the growth of netball, evident in the introduction of more tournaments for both men and women.
Coach Jabulani Vilane, having made changes to the squad, led a team predominantly composed of new players. Despite the changes, Mokaila, Lutendo Maiwashe, Eugene Sinxezi, and Edward Manyathela remained as the pillars of experience in the squad. Mokaila expressed excitement about the infusion of new talent and highlighted the importance of a well-structured succession plan.
