Banyana Banyana secures Wafcon qualification with three monumental milestones

Banyana

In a scintillating display at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on a blistering Monday afternoon, Banyana Banyana secured their spot in the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) with a 2-0 victory over Burkina Faso in the second leg of the qualifiers. The win propelled South Africa to a 3-1 aggregate victory and marked several historic milestones for the team.

Banyana Banyana's triumph means they will defend their Wafcon title in Morocco next year, showcasing their dominance in women's football on the continent. The victory was sealed through a second-half penalty converted by Linda Motlhalo and a goal by substitute Nicole Michael. The first significant achievement of the day was the legendary defender Janine van Wyk earning her record 185th cap.

Van Wyk's contribution to the team's defensive prowess has made her the most-capped footballer from the African continent, surpassing the record held by Egyptian legend Ahmed Hassan. Van Wyk started in the middle of the field, showcasing her versatility and making history. Coach Desiree Ellis celebrated her 100th match in charge of the team, adding another milestone to a remarkable tenure that began in 2016.

Ellis, a former Banyana captain, guided the team to unprecedented success in the Fifa World Cup earlier this year, has played a pivotal role in shaping the team's identity and achievements. Ellis is a founding member of Banyana Banyana in 1993, and the second captain of the national team. Monday's game also served as Van Wyk's farewell match, and she was substituted in the 8th minute to a standing ovation from the small crowd at the Atteridgeville venue.

The veteran defender officially bowed out of the sport as the most capped African player, leaving an indelible mark on South African football. Regarding gameplay, Banyana faced a resilient Burkina Faso side in the opening half, with both teams deadlocked at 0-0 at halftime. However, the second half saw a different narrative unfold, with the home side gaining momentum and pressure finally paying off.

Linda Motlhalo's converted penalty in the 53rd minute provided the breakthrough, setting the tone for Banyana's offensive push. Coming on as a second-half substitute, Nicole Michael added the finishing touch with her first-ever Banyana Banyana goal in the 86th minute, securing a 2-0 victory and confirming South Africa's place in the upcoming Wafcon.

Despite the challenging weather conditions, Banyana demonstrated their resilience and determination, creating numerous chances and showcasing their attacking prowess. Burkina Faso goalkeeper Faoziatou Ouedraogo faced relentless pressure from the South African team, with notable attempts bouncing off the upright. The win cements Banyana Banyana's status as African champions and sets the stage for their continued pursuit of success in the 2024 Olympic qualifications, with their following action scheduled for February 2024.
