Knocking out stereotypes in boxing and beyond

Knocking

Onalenna Tsae, formerly a coach of the North-West University (NWU) boxing team, is leaving an indelible mark on the realms of sports administration and boxing development. Her recent election as the Deputy Secretary-General (DSG) of the South African National Boxing Organisation (SANABO) attests to her growing influence in the field.

Tsae's immersion in boxing started in 2011 at NWU, prompted by a knee injury incurred during a basketball match. Unbeknownst to her, this choice would set the stage for an extraordinary journey of resilience and achievement. In 2015, faced with a boxing club without a coach, Tsae stepped into a leadership role.

Her passion and dedication catapulted the team to new heights.Breaking barriers in 2018, Tsae became the first female coach to secure the University Sports South Africa (USSA) Boxing Championships medal for the best coach. This triumph continued in 2019, solidifying her status as a trailblazer. Tsae's commitment and excellence did not go unnoticed.

In 2018 and 2019, she was recognised as the best coach in the North West Province. Beyond her provincial achievements, Tsae served as the chairperson of the Ngaka Modiri Molema district, Provincial Secretary of the Open Boxing Federation, and Secretary of USSA Boxing. Her recent election as the DSG of SANABO represents a significant leap in her career.

Working alongside the organisation's Secretary-General Liwa Mlokothi, Tsae is tasked with organising national championships, ensuring the smooth functioning of provinces and associates, and hosting tournaments. This role is a testament to her dedication to the sport and the confidence her province has placed in her.

Tsae's commitment to boxing extends beyond administrative roles. Alongside Coach Goitseone Kgopisho, Tsae co-founded the SK Boxing Academy. The academy aims to develop and enhance boxing in the North West Province. Tsae and Kgopisho believe that women-owned sport-related entities can bring balance to communities, particularly in male-dominated sports like boxing.

The academy aims to foster athletic talent and serves as a platform for community empowerment. Acknowledging her multifaceted contributions, Tsae was awarded Sports Administrator of the Year during the recent North Sports Awards. Currently serving as the DSG of SANABO, she plays a crucial role in the organisation's operations.

Beyond administrative responsibilities, Tsae actively manages day-to-day affairs and has successfully established a thriving Boxing Academy in the province. Reflecting on her journey, she expresses gratitude for the unexpected turns that led her to national leadership and recognition.

"When I joined boxing 12 years ago, I never imagined leading a national body or receiving an award. I am truly humbled by the confidence my province has shown in me through this significant token of appreciation," says Tsae.

As Tsae continues to pave the way for women in boxing and sports administration, her story stands as an inspiration for aspiring athletes and leaders in the world of sports.
