Meet Dr Katlego Sebogodi, a 31-year-old mathematics enthusiast from Dinokana Village near Zeerust in the North West Province. From excelling in his matric exams at Motswedi High School, with an impressive five distinctions, to pursuing a Degree in Actuarial Science at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2009, his passion for learning and helping others has always been evident.
Determined to broaden his knowledge, Dr Sebogodi ventured to North-West University in 2012, where he embarked on a BSc degree, focusing on four majors: Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics.
Throughout his academic journey, he remained captivated by pure mathematics, specifically asymmetric topology. He is now delving into mathematical physics, particularly fluid mechanics.
Dr Sebogodi's impact extends far beyond his studies. During high school, he took the initiative to conduct extra mathematics classes for his classmates on weekends, a testament to his commitment to empowering others through education. He recognised the power of education to uplift communities and was determined to make a difference.
As his academic pursuits continued, Dr Sebogodi authored comprehensive study guides called the "Star Math Series," catering for grade 10, grade 11, and grade 12 learners. These guides are designed to help students understand complex mathematical concepts and provide ample practice to improve their performance.
His passion for improving the quality of mathematics education in his community and across South Africa is evident in his dedication to helping learners reach their full potential.
Dr Sebogodi volunteered in local high schools throughout his university years, providing valuable mathematics lessons during holidays. He taught at St. Michael Private School in Mahikeng, covering the Cambridge syllabus (IGCSE and AS levels), and Ramotshere High School in his hometown.
Additionally, he contributed to the academic landscape by lecturing at various universities, including North-West University, Sol Plaatje University, and the University of the Witwatersrand.
Currently serving as a Mathematics Lecturer at the University of Johannesburg, Dr Sebogodi continues to inspire and nurture young minds. His primary concern remains the number of learners eligible for science-related university programs and the overall quality of matric results in South Africa.
